Your guide to buying a used caravan

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Buying a used static caravan is a little different to buying a caravan on wheels. Firstly, as the name suggests, it is static, i.e. it can’t easily be moved and it most certainly cannot be towed. But there are other considerations to take into account too. You need to pick a park; you will have to pay park fees; the costs involved are generally higher and seeing as you have much more flexibility over the design, style and layout of a static caravan than you do a motor home or wheeled caravan you need to spend more time deciding on what style and size of caravan you want to go for. Before you start buying with your heart instead of your head, read our buying guide on used caravan sales.

Location, location, location

Seeing as you can’t just up and leave if you don’t like somewhere once you’ve purchased a static caravan, you need to be 100% sure you like the location you choose to set up camp. When you buy a caravan from the selection of used caravan sales at Park Resorts you can ‘test drive’ the caravan first. You can get a feel for the park, its facilities and the surrounding area, which makes picking a winner much easier.

You need to choose a location that will suit you and your family both now and in the future, because your static caravan should be viewed as an investment as well as a holiday home. Consider the surrounding area; how easy the site is to access; how far the site is from your home; what there is to do when the weather turns bad and what kind of developments will take place in the future. Have a look at the Visit Britain website for tips on what to do in each of Britain’s regions.

Park Fees

Every park charges maintenance fees and you will need to factor these into your overall budget. Find out exactly what the fees cover and what, if any, of the facilities are exclusively for owners. Many parks, including Park Resorts, offer members-only times at pools and play areas and keep parks open for longer during low season purely for members.

The caravan

When perusing through used caravan sales you’ll notice very quickly just how much choice is on offer in terms of size, layout and design. Buying a static caravan is more like buying a holiday home than a traditional caravan. However, remember to think practically; wallpaper and wall colour, as well as minor design details, can be changed. What you need to priorities is the layout and the facilities, specifically in the kitchen and bathroom. Size is also a major factor. Remember that the size of the caravan will affect the cost of the pitch.
